Red vs. Blue States

Much of the political news in advance of the presidential election here in the United States centers around Red State vs. Blue State analysis. What drives this is the electoral college system we have for electing our president. It might be helpful to remind ourselves how we elect the President of the United States and why.

Presidential candidates need electors to be elected, not votes

We do not elect president by virtue of a winner take all count of votes in the country. Each state is awarded a number of electors. The number of electors is equal to the number of representatives and senators it has in congress. Those electors are pledged to one candidate or another based on a selection process made by the state. How a state determines what candidate gets it’s electors is determined by the state, but in nearly all cases the electors are awarded in winner-take-all fashion following the election. In other words, if Candidate 1 received more votes than Candidate B in the election held in Texas, then Texas would send all of it’s electors in support of Candidate A.

You can win the vote and lose the election

In the year 2000, George W. Bush won more electors than Al Gore and became president in spite of a situation where Al Gore actually received more votes than Bush. This led to a lot of confusion and even more education as to how we elect presidents in this country.

The electoral system exist for a reason

If the President of the United States is elected by a simple majority votes there will be no campaigning in smaller states for the office. The larger states such as New York and California will get all of the focus, since only campaigning in places where you are talking to the most voters will make any sense. In fact, campaigning in large cities would be the only logical place to campaign for president if the electoral system did not exist. The electoral system was put in place to protect the interests of the smaller states in the process of selecting the president. It has worked. Colorado is considered a “battleground” state and is getting plenty of attention from the candidates in this 2008 election despite is relatively small size in relation to our most populous states. If we did without the electoral system, presidential candidates would spend nearly all of their time in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. Most of Ohio would be fairly ignored, it’s cities are just not big enough. San Antonio would become much more important than Detroit.

If it’s not broken….

Our system of electing presidents has served us well for over 200 years. Perhaps one of the best things the framers of the constitution gave us was making the constitution itself hard to change.

All Hail the Government License

ABC News seems to be headlining the recent crane tragedy in Houston by pointing out Texas to be one of 35 states not requiring crane operators to be licensed achat cialis quebec.

Here is the direct quote:

Texas is one of 35 states that does not require crane operators to be licensed. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires cranes to undergo annual inspections, but it is up to crane owners in the state to police themselves.

I note that New York is a state requiring crane operators to be licensed. It hasn’t stopped cranes from collapsing up there. I’m not sure what their point is, besides suggesting we need more regulation driving up the cost of construction here in Texas. Especially since the quote above is prefaced with the following remark:

The crane’s operator, Deep South Crane & Rigging, has an excellent safety record.

I am tired, disgusted and amused, all of that, by the knee jerk reaction to every tragedy calling for more government. More government? As Newt Gingrich points out in this video, our federal government can’t find 10 million illegal immigrants, most of which are not moving, when we can get on the Internet and track 10 million FedEX and UPS packages that are moving in real time every day. More governemt? Why?

More government will not fix crane mishaps. Increasing insurance rates may lead to more safety concerns regarding cranes, and we don’t need government for that.

Packing Heat and Sausage

I applaud the U.S. Supreme Court’s interpretation of our Constitution’s Second Amendment to declare the right of an individual to own a handgun for self protection. The public discussion has, I note, bypassed the equally important decision to strike down the requirement a gun be secured with a trigger lock or dismantled. The Supreme Court has not only said I have a right to own my .44 automag personal hand cannon, but that it may rest at the ready on my nightstand cocked and loaded without government intrusion. Great balls of (gun) fire.

Of course, I will not consider this truly the land of the free again until I can sell homemade sausage from my driveway unmolested by the FDA.

Why Not?

Our congressmen (and women) intend to give us some of our tax money back to stimulate the economy. That begs the question: If giving us our money back is good for our economy right now, why isn’t it always a good idea? Why do we have to wait until our economy slows to get a tax rebate? If a little tax rebate helps our economy, why don’t we see what a really big rebate will do? If a tax rebate helps a struggling economy, will it not make a good economy great? Think of all of the jobs created by more and more, bigger and bigger tax rebates! And why don’t I hear anyone asking these questions!?

Not News

Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.
